Why a regular dental check is important

One of the most important things you can do to maintain oral hygiene is a regular visit to a dentist. Recommended every 6 months.

Removing tartar or calculus can only be done by a dentist. Also, having a professional regularly assess your oral hygiene will treat problems early to avoid more complicated and expensive treatment later.

Your Dental Exam with Dr Finkelstein

At your check-up and cleaning appointment we will do a full oral examination. This will assess the overall health of your gums and soft tissue as well as diagnosing any tooth decay. He will also do a scale, polish and fluoride treatment of your teeth.

Step 1

Dental x-rays (radiographs)

X-rays reveal the positions of teeth and their roots. They are essential for the detection of decay, tumours, cysts, and detecting bone loss. Find out more about dental x-rays.

Step 2

Oral cancer screening

The face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, gums and surrounding tissues are examined for any indicators of oral cancer.

Step 3

Gum disease evaluation

The gums and bone around the teeth are checked for any signs of periodontal (gum) disease.

Step 4

Examination of tooth decay

The outer, inner and biting tooth surfaces will be checked for decay using dental instruments.

Step 5

Examination of existing restorations

We will ensure that current fillings and crowns are in good condition.

Step 6

Professional clean

We ensure the removal of plaque and the hard to remove tartar. This is essential to preventing dental decay and gum disease. This is followed by a fluoride treatment which gives teeth strength and prevents the build up of plaque and tartar. Read more about the importance of fluoride.
