Composite bonding
Composite bonding, or Dental Bonding, is an affordable alternative to fix chips, gaps and misaligned teeth.
What does composite bonding do?
Composite bonding is commonly used to:
- Repair broken or chipped teeth
- Reduce space (gaps) between teeth
- Revitalise stained or discouloured teeth.
- Fix teeth misalignment
- Create a level set of teeth
- An alternative to teeth whitening treatments
Benefits of composite bonding
Composite bonding is a form of adhesive dentistry where a tooth-coloured resin is applied to a broken, crooked or wrongly spaced tooth to correct the position, size or shape of a tooth or set of teeth. This resin is bonded to your natural tooth to improve the overall aesthetics of your smile.
- Versatile treatment to fix chips, gaps, misaligned or discoloured teeth.
- Composite bonding is a more affordable treatment than porcelain veneers for more minor cosmetic issues.
- Fast procedure, often able to be completed in one visit (for minor improvements).
Composite bonding considerations
Composite bonding is extremley popular and suits many cosmetic dental issues. Things to be aware of are:
- Composite bonding can last up to 5 years whereas treatments like porcelain veneers can last up to 10 years.
- Care needs to be taken to avoid staining of teeth. Reducing intake of coffee, red wine and smoking is not only good for health but good for your overall health also.
- Cosmetic bonding can treat a wide range of teeth imperfections, however major cosmetic issues might require an alternate treatment,
Your composite bonding treatment with Dr Finkelstein
Composite bonding is a minimally invasive treatment usually performed over 2 appointments.
First Consultation
Assessment
Dr Finkelstein will assess the health of your teeth and the determine the suitability of composite bonding over other treatments. We then work with you to determine the shade of material that will match with your current set of teeth to ensure it will look great but also natural and unique to you.
Second Consultation
Applying the resin
When your tooth or set of teeth are ready the resin will be applied. This is molded and smoothened to the proper shape. An ultraviolet light is exposed to the resin to harden it. Once hardened we will then shape, polish and trim the new look teeth to give your smile a natural polished look.
Post treatment care for composite bonding
It is quite easy to maintain your teeth after composite bonding. The following suggestions are guidelines that should be followed in order to maintain your new smile longer:
Cleaning teeth
It is recommended that you brush and floss your teeth as usual. It is important to maintain good oral hygiene routines as well as regular dental hygiene appointments to maintain your smile.
What to avoid
Your average diet should not cause any problems after composite bonding has been applied. However, like natural teeth, over time they can become stained from typical culprits like red wine, coffee, and cigarettes/tobacco. Care should be taken with hard objects like nuts and ice along with watching habits like chewing fingernails and pens.
Teeth grinding
If you know that you grind your teeth or clench them in your sleep, please let us know as we may advise you to wear a guard at night to reduce the pressure placed upon your teeth.
How much does composite bonding cost?
Each treatment is different based on the number of teeth being treated and quality of materials used. It is important to select treatments which will provide a natural looking smile and veneers which match your existing teeth structure.
