Dental Crowns
Due to decay or treatment dental crowns restore teeth to their former glory.
What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns are a popular method to replace the top visible portion of tooth. They are used to reinforce and guard the existing tooth structure and can be used to increase the aesthetic appearance of teeth.
When are dental crowns used?
- A tooth that has more filling than tooth in it. Eventually, the structure of the remaining tooth will not be able to support the filling anymore.
- Fractures in teeth
- Discolouration, staining and poor aesthetic appearance
- Root Canal – subsequent to Root Canal, teeth can become brittle and have a higher chance of fracture and in these cases guarded by a Dental Crown
- Create bridges – when a bridge is used to substitute for absent teeth, the neighbouring teeth need crowns in order to support the substitute teeth.
What are the benefits of dental crowns?
Porcelain crowns reinforce and guard the existing tooth structure and can be used to improve the function and aesthetics of teeth. Crowns can be made from a number of materials however porcelain avoids the appearance of black lines appearing underneath older, cheaper metallic crowns.
Your Dental Crown & Bridge treatment with Dr Finkelstein
A typical crown is fitted over two appointments.
Step 1
Your choice of crown
The type of crown used depends on a number of factors including strength, position and visual concerns. The right crown to suit your personal circumstances will be discussed. We have a number of expert ceramicists in Sydney to design a crown to suit your personal tooth style and budget. We will explain your options for crown choice and the pros and cons of each.
Step 2
Preparation & temporary crown
You will be given a local anaesthetic to ensure that the procedure is pain-free The existing tooth is then prepared in a precise manner to connect with the new crown.
An impression and mould of the crown is created so the ceramist knows the exact size shape and colour to create the new crown.
A temporary crown will then be placed on the tooth. The temporary crown is made of a plastic material and is used to simply guard the tooth and gum tissue until the second appointment.
Step 3
Fitting of the new crown
The temporary crown will be taken out and the cement used to secure it will be removed from the tooth. We will adjust and fit the final crown to perfection and assess the visual look of the crown.
Once we are pleased with the shape and aesthetics of the crown, we will secure it to the tooth using a permanent cementation technique.
Taking care of your temporary crown
Home care of the temporary crown is vital to the success of the final result.
- Firstly, if you experience any aches or pains, you can take mild analgesics such as Nurofen or Panadol, or anything you would typically take for a headache.
- It is essential that you consistently clean your teeth between the first and second visit, advisably twice a day, as per usual.
- If your crown becomes wobbly, attempt to position it back on your tooth immediately. If you have difficulty doing this, please contact us immediately.
- It is essential for you to replace the crown or bridge immediately as the surrounding teeth only take a short time to shift positions meaning the new crown may not fit properly.
- If you cannot place the crown or bridge back in place, please contact us immediately.
What is the recovery period after a crown?
Once your new crown has been placed, it is common that you may experience slight sensitivity to cold food and beverages in the following few weeks. If the sensitivity is extreme or does not go away, or if it feels abnormal to bite with your new crown, then contact us as an extra adjustment to the crown may be needed.
How much do dental crowns cost?
Dental crowns can vary greatly in cost. Depending on which tooth needs a crown, how many teeth need a crown or if they are supporting a bridge. We also use a number of ceramicists who each design different styles and quality of porcelain crowns. During your initial appointment a full breakdown of costs and options relevant to your treatment will be discussed prior to treatment.
